10 years ago the children of Gorran School were photographed for The Cornish Guardian walking across the muddy fields that they wanted to turn into a path. It wasn’t until after a Dream Catchers project run by The Eden Project in 2009 that the right groups of people from Cornwall Council and Sustrans were brought together to help make the ‘dream’ a reality.
After a lot of different routes had been investigated work finally began on the path this spring.
The new path – actually a multi-use trail for walkers and cyclists – runs from Gorran Haven to Gorran, creating a walking link between the two villages avoiding the busy road. There is a new entrance to the school onto the path and a large new bike shed provides plenty of space for children’s bikes.
A launch party was held by the school to celebrate the achievement and lots of pupils, now at The Roseland Community College, who had been part of the project team in the past were invited back to see the opening of the path.
First there were speeches of thanks, including one from Lucy, one of the children involved in the original presentation at Eden and now a Year 9 student at The Roseland. Then the ribbon was cut by Rosie, our youngest pupil, Lucy, Local Councillor Denise Mutton and Simon Murray from Sustrans.
The whole school, guests and parents then walked the path whilst the school’s ukulele orchestra played their specially written song for the footpath. It was a lovely, joyous event that was enjoyed by all.
